Nearly anyone, including a child, can be at risk for a sleep disorder. Because there are so many types of sleep disorders (more than 80), it is difficult to point to any one risk for any one disorder. Still, certain factors increase a person's likelihood for sleep problems:
- Excess weight
- High blood pressure
- Other chronic conditions such as COPD, hypertension, cancer or diabetes
- Smoking
- Being middle aged or older
- Family history / genetics
- Neurologic conditions
- Psychiatric conditions
- Hormone imbalances
