There are more than 80 sleep disorders, believed to affect more than 60 million Americans each year. Among the more common are sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs, periodic limb movement syndrome ("PLMS"), circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias and narcolepsy.
At the Sleep Disorders Center, we provide Fort Collins' only certified sleep center fully staffed by technicians specially trained in giving comprehensive sleep studies.
We test for respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders such as:
- sleep apnea
- narcolepsy
- periodic limb movement disorder
- restless legs syndrome
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing is interrupted during sleep. It can result in loud snoring, breath-holding and daytime sleepiness. Sleep apnea typically affects middle-age people, and people with sleep apnea are often overweight. However, it can also affect children and people in a normal weight range.
Narcolepsy is a sleep conditions that causes sudden, extreme drowsiness and abrupt attacks of sleep.
Periodic limb movement disorder is repeated body movements in the toes, feet, ankles and/or legs during sleep. The sleeping person may be unaware of these movements, but a sleep partner may notice them.
Restless legs syndrome is a condition that occurs during inactivity, including sleep. It is characterized by discomfort typically in the lower legs, often described as "creeping" or "aching." Restless legs can make it difficult or uncomfortable to fall or stay asleep.
