Breastfeeding Support Services at PVH S
There are many breastfeeding benefits for both you and your baby. Breastfeeding can be challenging at first but we offer many breastfeeding services and resources to help you successfully breast-feed your baby. To help breastfeeding get off to the right start, we encourage you to hold your baby skin-to-skin as much as possible in the hours and days after birth. Rooming-in, keeping your baby in your room during your hospital stay, also helps establish a good start with breastfeeding.
When mother's milk isn't available, donor human milk may help your baby thrive and grow. To learn more about human donor milk, how to donate milk or how to receive donated milk, visit our donor human milk web page or the Mother's Milk Bank.
Breastfeeding Resources
Our lactation support brochure also has some helpful information about breastfeeding resources.
If you have any breastfeeding questions or concerns, we can help through a variety of programs. The following resources are open to all mothers who deliver their babies at PVH or MCR.
WeeSteps
We offer all new mothers the opportunity to schedule a free appointment with a certified lactation counselor within the first week of your baby's life. This is a great chance to ask questions and discuss any infant feeding issues.
If you experience breastfeeding difficulties after you go home, you may call to speak to a certified lactation counselor about your specific concerns. Your concerns may be resolved over the phone or by appointment.
Breastfeeding Support Groups
PVH and MCR both have Breastfeeding Support Groups that provide an opportunity to receive help from certified lactation counselors and support from other moms in a comfortable, friendly setting. Children are welcome.
The MCR Support Group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the lower level of MCR (2500 Rocky Mountain Ave., Loveland). Questions? Call 970.624.5100.
The PVH Support Group meets every Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Westbridge Medical Suites (1107 S. Lemay Ave., Fort Collins, across the street from PVH) in the Westbridge Conference Center. Questions? Call 970.495.8283.
Welcome to Motherhood meets from 2-3 p.m. every Wednesday. This is a time for new moms to meet and share experiences, form new friendships, and learn. There will be lots of time for mom-to-mom sharing and the opportunity to discuss topics important to you. Moms and their babies from newborn to crawling age are welcome.
Back to Work Support
We encourage you to meet with a lactation counselor to prepare you for breastfeeding success after returning to work. During this visit, the lactation counselor will:
- teach you how to properly use your breast pump
- help you form a plan for pumping and feeding schedules based on your individual needs
- help you meet your breastfeeding goals after returning to work
NICU Lactation Services
PVH has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which means that most critically ill infants born as young as 26 weeks gestation can be cared for at PVH. If your baby is a patient in the NICU, a lactation counselor will meet with you to answer your questions, ensure that pumping gets started and provide information on realistic expectations for breastfeeding.
