Application process

Resident eligibility

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment:

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

i. Medical students applying to the Fort Collins Family Medicine Residency Program must take Step 2 of the USMLE (clinical skills and clinical knowledge) or equivalent COMLEX exam, prior to graduation from medical school.

ii. Students are highly encouraged to take the exam by December of their fourth year so the results are available prior to the NRMP in March. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet all of the following qualifications:

        i. Satisfactory completion of the examination of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
ii. Satisfactory completion of the USMLE examination.
iii. Submission of evidence by the applicant, satisfactory to the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, that the medical school from which the applicant graduated is approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or conforms to the minimal educational standards established by the LCME or AOA as determined by the Board.
iv. Completion of three years of post-graduate training in an ACGME-approved program in the United States or Canada.

Resident selection
To assure that a systematic and fair process is used for selecting eligible applicants, the Fort Collins Program:

  • Participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
  • Does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or any other applicable legally protected status.
  • Applies the following selection criteria to all applicants:
        i. Personal qualities such as motivation and integrity
ii. Communication skills
iii. Academic credentials
iv. Records of performance in medical school
v. Commitment to working with underserved populations
vi. Rural interest
vii. Family medicine commitment
viii. Community involvement/volunteerism
ix. Propensity to practice in the service area of University of Colorado Health

If you wish to apply for admission to our program, the following are required for your application to be accepted for review:

  • Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application

  • Personal statement (include brief biographical sketch with background, philosophical and other descriptive content and your plans after residency; interest in or connection to Colorado)

  • Dean's letter

  • Medical school transcript

  • USMLE or Comlex scores

  • Three letters of recommendation

We plan to interview approximately 80 candidates. Candidates who submit completed applications early have the most flexibility for interviews. Therefore, we encourage you to submit a completed application as soon as possible. Most of our interviews will be scheduled mid-October through January.

Application Deadline (and receipt of all the above items) is November 5, 2012.

All materials and requirements above are necessary before residency applications will be reviewed. Forward all information through ERAS. Paper applications will not be accepted.
