Poudre Valley Health System CEO Rulon Stacey will be sworn in Saturday as the chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Stacey, 50, replaces outgoing chairman Chris Van Gorder, CEO of Scripps Health in San Diego and one of Modern Healthcare's 100 most powerful people in healthcare. Stacey will assume the role at the annual Council of Regents Meeting during the 54th Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago.

The ACHE is an international professional society of more than 35,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. ACHE is known for its prestigious FACHE credential, Congress on Healthcare Leadership conference, network of more than 80 chapters, educational offerings, publications, career development and public policy programs, and research.

Based in Chicago, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery.

"It's perhaps the greatest professional honor I've ever received," Stacey said. "When your peers ask you to fill a role like this, it's a great and distinct honor."

Stacey will address the ACHE Congress Monday morning at 7 a.m. MST. Stacey takes the ACHE chairman role at one of healthcare's most dynamic times. Improving patient safety, the future of healthcare reform, government mandates and a growing uninsured population are among the issues facing the country and today's healthcare executives.

"This leaves us—the healthcare executives of ACHE—with an important task in front of us," Stacey said. "Specifically, what can we do to correctly identify the issues which have created the problems we are trying to address, and what can we do to help find the right solutions?"

Stacey has been the CEO of PVHS since 1996. During his tenure PVHS has consistently been recognized as one of the nation's top health systems, and PVHS hospitals Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies have been recognized as some of the nation's best hospitals.

In 2008 PVHS earned the Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation's top award for quality. Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies have both earned the Magnet designation for nursing excellence, the gold standard for nursing.

The hospitals were also two of just five to receive a national award in January from the American Nurses Association's National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators for achieving and sustaining outstanding nursing quality that improves patient care and safety.

Before joining Poudre Valley Health System, Stacey held administrative posts at hospitals in Chicago, Illinois and Leadville, Colo. He spent three years in the U.S. Air Force as an assistant administrator of a base hospital in California.

He received the 1999 Robert S. Hudgens Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives as the "Young Healthcare Executive of the Year."

A native of Provo, Utah, Stacey holds a bachelor of science in economics and a master's degree in health administration from Brigham Young University and a doctor of philosophy in health policy from the University of Colorado.
