Rehabilitation Unit to open at Medical Center of the Rockies
More rooms, bigger rooms, technology and design updates and coordinated patient care: these are the reasons that University of Colorado Health has invested approximately $6 million into a new inpatient rehabilitation unit at Medical Center of the Rockies. The unit is scheduled to open on October 1.
The Medical Center of the Rockies Rehabilitation Unit will help people who have experienced major injury or illness to regain the skills necessary for everyday life. They will care for individuals with disabilities resulting from, among others:
- Stroke.
- Neurological disorder.
- Brain injury.
- Spinal cord injury.
- Amputation.
- Multiple injuries due to trauma.
- Complex orthopedic conditions.
"We were very fortunate to remain in our Poudre Valley Hospital location as Life Skills Rehabilitation for many years, said Kay Miller, Medical Center of the Rockies Chief Nursing Officer. "However, as demands for larger room sizes and a more family-centered environment of care increased, we knew we would have to make some changes."
The 17,600 square foot unit allows University of Colorado Health to increase its number of inpatient rehabilitation rooms from 11 to 18, all of which are larger. The unit also features a large kitchen and living area, a dedicated family room and updated therapy equipment.
"Given that MCR had more space available for an expanded unit and that about a third of our inpatient rehabilitation population came as a result of trauma, it made sense for us to relocate to a Level II advanced trauma center," said Dr. Daniel Wilson, MCR Rehabilitation Unit medical director.
The new unit is located on the fifth floor of Medical Center of the Rockies, providing spectacular views for patients during their recovery and quick and convenient access to other important clinical services such lab, imaging, respiratory therapy and rapid response teams.
